Courses and projects

Our curriculum prepares students with the knowledge necessary for academic success at the college level. Our core curriculum is aligned with standards outlining the competencies necessary for mastery in each subject as set forth by the state of WA and our accreditation bodies. The Climbing Academy curriculum is also adapted to our travel itinerary, increasing the educational potential of every class at each destination visited. Classes take advantage of some of the most unique field trips and learning opportunities in the world to provide TCA students with an academic background few schools can offer.

For students looking beyond the available course offerings at TCA or to segue with curriculum from their school of origin, the option to pursue an independent study is also available. Students who choose an independent study enjoy the challenge of student-directed learning and are paired with faculty advisors who assist with subject matter and established guidelines. The ability to pursue all Advanced Placement coursework at TCA is facilitated by our independent study option.

Service Learning Projects

Each semester students and staff will organize and execute a Service Learning Project that will vary depending on location. These projects give our program an opportunity to give something back to the environment and to the local populations where we travel. This is a fundamental part of the program at TCA

The Climbing Academy will often team up with local organizations in order to execute these projects. Students will receive community service hours for this project and a certificate of completion for each project.

WCA projects in the past have included:
  • Yunnan, China River Clean-Up
  • Sarapiqui, Costa Rica Water Festival + Cultural exchange
  • Pokhara, Nepal Painting classrooms/school
  • Carruhue, Chile Water Festival w/ Mapuche students
  • Veracruz, Mexico English Classes
